Warm Bread, Cold Day ...

Cold day is an understatement. We've been waking up to negative numbers. Yikes. Woo. Brr. And we have had almost a foot of snow on the ground since Christmas Eve.

Some dear neighbors just got back from their Christmas vacation & I still needed to give them a little something. I have made dozens of truffles & hundreds of chocolate dipped pretzels. So I didn't want to make anything sweet. I went with savory. I found this recipe for cheddar beer bread & it was perfect. I used our local brewery's [Boulevard] Pale Ale ... then used the 6-pack box as part of the packaging [along with a new kitchen towel]. That was a last minute idea ... but I thought it was a fun way to deliver it. Not only is it free & "green" as far as gift wrap goes ... it helps tell a tale of what's in the bread. The smell in my house was intoxicating. Homemade bread. There is nothing like it on a cold winter's day. Nothing. The best part about this recipe is that it makes 2 loaves. That way you get to cut yourself a little sliver off your own loaf & sample it before you give it away. Technically, my sampling was a sliver + 2 extra large slices.

Recipe can be found here ... and the only changes I made was that I used a little less pepper, after reading some of the comments that it was too peppery.  The recipe calls for 1 tsp & I did a 1/2 tsp & I thought it was good & peppery & can't IMAGINE having double that. Also, I did use shredded cheddar cheese [despite what they told me] but just poured it in slowly & let it mix before adding more. Oh & I didn't use marjoram. I have no idea what that tastes like & I don't think I have it in my spice cabinet!

I think the bread would go great with this Beef Stew. Might have to try it out. :)
